La Vapeur du Trieux steam train

From Paimpol to Pontrieux, climb aboard for a journey through time on a genuine steam train

Travel back in time on an authentic hundred-year-old steam train!

After a four-year absence, la Vapeur du Trieux is back in service!  This historic train, whose locomotive is a listed historical monument, invites you on a unique journey between Paimpol and Pontrieux.  On board, time seems to slow down:  the wheels clack gently on the rails, accompanied by flurries of steam, and the Breton countryside is revealed in a new light.  Travelling at 30 kilometres per hour, the classic steam-powered locomotive takes you through the magnificent coastal forest of Penhoat-Lancerf.

A journey to the heart of the Côtes d’Armor

The line leads to the heart of the forest of Penhoat-Lancerf, one of the largest coastal forests of Brittany.  The forest, which has been modified over the centuries, is nowadays made up of conifers and deciduous trees planted in the 19th century, alternating with areas of moorland where heather and gorse flourish.

The journey passes from more enclosed areas where the trees line the railway track, creating a living green gallery, to openings onto the Trieux Estuary, revealing superb views of the winding river.  On the way, the steam train also passes by the manoir de Traou-Nez (now the Maison de l’Estuaire), which adds a touch of mystery to the journey because of its connection to the Seznec Affair, one of the great judicial mysteries of 20th-century France.

Immerse yourself in Brittany’s railway heritage

From the first moment, be transported back in time.  The locomotive, a testament to the rail heritage of Brittany, rolls along at 30 kilometres per hour, an ideal speed to enjoy the journey.  From Paimpol station, once the departure point of seafarers on their way to Iceland, the train skirts the estuary of the Trieux river, making its way slowly inland.

Pontrieux, Petite Cité de Caractère®

After an hour’s journey, la Vapeur du Trieux makes a stop at Pontrieux, Petite Cité de Caractère® on the banks of the Trieux.  A former river port, the town has a well preserved heritage, with cobbled streets, half-timbered houses and a monumental 18th-century fountain.

Classed as the 6th most popular French village in 2023, Pontrieux is especially well-known for its 50 ‘lavoirs’ - wash-houses which were in daily use at one time.  Visitors can take a boat trip to better admire these vestiges of the past, which are illuminated in the evening during the summer.

The Tourist Office organises guided visits to discover the history of the lavoirs, the historic town centre and the development of the river port.  Just a few kilometres’ away, the château de la Roche-Jagu and its grounds, awarded “Eco Jardin” and “Jardin Remarquable” status, complete your immersion in the heritage of Brittany.

A blend of history, nature and local traditions, Pontrieux is an essential part of your visit to Brittany, and a perfect way to extend the timeless experience of La Vapeur du Trieux.

An experience not to be missed!

More than just an everyday train journey, La Vapeur du Trieux is a fabulous experience where nature and history come together in harmony.  Whether you come for the charm of a steam train, to discover the heritage of Brittany, or perhaps just to enjoy a peaceful journey, this is one of the not-to-be-missed experiences of your holiday destination.
