Appreciate a nice stroll accompanied by a guide who has many stories to tell. That is the offer of Thomas Lagadec.
Thomas Lagadec offers four discovery outings among nature, foreshore, heritage and gourmet delights. For a walk of a few kilometres, enjoy the scenery through a series of scientific or historical anecdotes. Today we're exploring the foreshore at the rhythm of the tides.
Holidays mean beach, but do you know the foreshore ?
All year long, Thomas Lagadec organises walks departing from the Launay beach in Ploubazlanec, to observe the foreshore at the rhythm of the tides. And you have to venture there at the right time… One hour before the low tide, until one hour after the water has risen. Whether you’re a shellfish-gatherer or just curious about knowing how the foreshore works, this activity is made for you !
A wonderful place
The activity is carried out on the Launay beach. You will find it is a very quiet place, because it’s protected by the Bréhat archipelago and the Sillon de Talbert. Breathtaking scenery awaits the hikers. On the left, the Pointe de l’Arcouest, behind which is the jetty for Bréhat. In front of us, the lovely Bréhat and Logodec island. Then, on the right, the Pointe de la Trinité, famous for its moving Croix des veuves or Widow’s Cross, named by the writer Pierre Loti, as well as the Chapelle de la Trinité along the coastal path. The activity takes place in an idyllic setting, in the direction of the Pointe de l’Arcouest to explore the nooks and crannies and look for hiding little creatures.
Shellfish gathering and learning about the foreshore
The objective of the activity is to learn a few tips about shellfish gathering, but that’s not all. Thomas also explains the mechanism of the foreshore along the tides, and the interest of species that fishermen are often not interested in, such as seaweed, grass beds… But the educational walk ends with actual shellfish gathering. From the methods for catching razor clams to techniques for spotting abalones and velvet crabs… Thomas passes on his secrets… to the participants of the walk !
Fishing and history !
Along your discovery journey, the nature guide also takes time to explain the local history. From the Pointe de l’Arcouest and its inhabitants like Pierre and Marie Curie to the work of the oyster aquaculturists of the bay. The historical interludes add to the charm of this maritime stroll !
